Aims & Scope
What is in scope, what is not, and what we are specifically looking for.
Solar Cell Insights is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated to publishing high-quality research in all areas of solar cell science and technology. The journal covers experimental, theoretical, and computational studies with an emphasis on physical mechanisms, measurement methodologies, and structure–property–performance relationships.
The scope includes, but is not limited to, organic, inorganic, hybrid, and tandem solar cells; charge generation and recombination; energetics and charge transport; interfaces and morphology; device physics, photophysics, degradation, and stability; and advanced characterization and analysis techniques.
Solar Cell Insights explicitly welcomes scientifically sound studies reporting negative, null, or non-optimised results, provided the methodology, analysis, and interpretation meet high standards of rigor and transparency.
Technologies covered
| Silicon solar cells | Mono- and multicrystalline, PERC, TOPCon, heterojunction, back-contact; wafer, passivation and contact studies |
| Perovskite solar cells | Composition, processing, interfaces, ion migration, hysteresis, encapsulation and operational stability |
| Organic solar cells (OSC) | Donor–acceptor systems, non-fullerene acceptors, morphology, energetics, photophysics |
| Dye-sensitised solar cells | Sensitisers, electrolytes, counter-electrodes, charge injection and recombination kinetics |
| CIGS and CdTe | Absorber growth, grading, grain boundaries, buffer layers, back contacts, metastability |
| III–V solar cells | Epitaxy, high-efficiency architectures, concentrator and space photovoltaics |
| Quantum-dot solar cells | Colloidal quantum dots, ligand chemistry, coupling, multiple exciton generation |
| Tandem and multijunction | Two- and four-terminal designs, including organic–organic tandems; recombination layers, current matching, spectral considerations |
| Emerging photovoltaics | Kesterites, antimony chalcogenides, ferroelectric and other emerging absorber systems |
Research themes
What is out of scope
- Photovoltaic system design, inverters, grid integration and balance-of-system engineering
- Energy policy, techno-economic analysis and market forecasting with no device-level science
- Solar thermal, concentrated solar power and photocatalysis, unless directly coupled to a photovoltaic device study
- Materials studies with no demonstrated or clearly argued photovoltaic relevance
- Purely computational screening with no experimental anchor or physical validation
We are actively looking for: reproducibility and repeat studies; systematic negative results with sound controls; degradation and failure analyses; inter-laboratory comparisons; papers that correct or qualify a widely cited claim; and methodological papers on standardised characterisation.
